On Wednesday, 27, July 2022, the Center for Biomedical Research (CBR) under Dr. Anwarul Abedin Research Institute, AIUB in collaboration with the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society AIUB Chapter successfully hosted a Seminar session titled – “Biomedical Research for Sustainable Development”. The objective of this seminar was to offer a series of useful opinions involving the opportunities and obstacles of researching and developing methods to increase sustainability in the biomedical field.

Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan, Director, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB; inaugurated the seminar. At first, he welcomed everyone and introduced himself. Then he talked briefly about the field of Biomedical Engineering and the importance of sustainability. Afterward, he thanked the Center for Biomedical Research (CBR) under Dr. Anwarul Abedin Research Institute, AIUB, and IEEE EMBS AIUB Chapter for organizing the seminar and thanked the people who participated in the event.

The first speaker of the event was Dr. Mohammad Hasan Imam, Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB. First, He welcomed the audience. The honorable speaker then briefly explained the focus of his session and explained EMBS to everyone. The speaker then discussed the sustainability goals published by United Nations (3 and 9). He reviewed the Bangladeshi perspective of biomedical engineering and explained various technics of Biomedical imaging, rehabilitation engineering, pacemakers, and sensor-based early disease detection systems. Afterward, he discussed publishers named BMES, IFMBE, and Nature. Lastly, he showed activities and awards achieved by the IEEE EMBS AIUB Chapter. He concluded his speech by thanking everyone.

Later, The second speaker of the session, Humayra Fredous, Deputy Director, Center for Biomedical Research (CBR), Dr. Anwarul Abedin Research Institute, AIUB; Head-in-Charge and Associate Professor in the Department of Physics, AIUB; welcomed everyone and specially thanked Dr. Mohammad Hasan Imam for his session. The speaker then discussed the current scenario of the biomedical field and showed some illustrations of how medical technology works now. She explained the areas of the biomedical field such as Medical Physics, Radiation therapy, Dosimetry, and Cancer treatment. Thereafter, she briefly discussed Neural Fields Theory, Brain dynamics, Linear Accelerator, Nuclear Medicine Biophysics, and methodologies regarding the Biomedical sector. Subsequently, she discussed sustainable development goals No. 3, 4, and 17 and showed how these goals can help to improve the effectiveness of Biomedical technology. Lastly, she opened the Q&A session and answered the questions from the audience properly, and ended her session by thanking everyone.

Afterward, Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, and Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan, Director, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB; delivered the tokens of appreciation to the honorable speakers, Dr. Humayra Fredous, and Dr. Mohammad Hasan Imam.

At the end of the seminar, the concluding speech was given by Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman, Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB; where he addressed the ethical aspects of the engineering field. He pointed out the misconceptions of people regarding the connection between doctors and engineers and explained how we can work in harmony to solve such problems. Later, he concluded his speech by thanking the honorable speaker and thanking the initiatives taken by the Center for Biomedical Research (CBR) under Dr. Anwarul Abedin Research Institute, AIUB, and IEEE EMBS AIUB Chapter.

The event was attended by 50+ attendees, including students as well as faculties, executives, and volunteers.
