On 21st October 2017, IEEE AIUB Student Branch & IEEE Industry Applications Society (IA-S) AIUB Student Branch Chapter organized a workshop titled "Substation Planning, Designing & Commissioning" in collaboration with INNOVA Engineering Limited, which took place at Room No. CL11, Annex 2, American International University - Bangladesh. The workshop focused on enlightening the participants on the fundamental principles of establishing substation. It was a very knowledgeable venture for enthusiasts who were looking forward to pursuing a career in power engineering.
The first speaker of the seminar, Engr. Md. Mahadi Habib, B.Sc in EEE, Trainer Innova Skill Development Training Center (ISDTC), initiated his presentation by emphasizing on electricity generation process from the national grid to the consumer. Later, he elaborated on the classification of substation starting with "Transmission Substation" which is used to connect two or more transmission lines and ending with "Switching Station" which operates only at a single voltage level.
Next on the stage was the second speaker of the workshop, Engr. Md. Fardouse Alam, Engineer (Automation), Innova Engineering Limited; Director, Innova Skill Development Training Center (ISDTC), who started off with a discussion on power triangle and power factor and their corresponding significance in designing a substation respectively. Afterwards, he elaborated the participants on the single line distribution system and relay bus-bar connection.
The third speaker of the workshop, Md. Mazharul Islam, B.Sc in EEE, Trainer Innova Skill Development Training Center (ISDTC), took the stage next and initiated his presentation on the different types of tests required before the commissioning of a substation. The tests include transformer test, oil test, no load test, short circuit test, winding resistance test among others.
He then gave the stage to the fourth speaker of the workshop, Engr. Md. Amzad Hossain, B.Sc in EEE, Trainer, Innova Skill Development Training Center (ISDTC), who gave a short presentation on the various components used in the electric power distribution. He demonstrated the usage of the fuse, PFC relays, bus-bar, lightning arrestors and isolators respectively. The session was concluded with an interactive question and answer session with the participants.
The concluding speech was delivered by respected Dr. M. Tanseer Ali, Counselor, IEEE AIUB Student Branch; Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, who talked about the growing demand for engineers in the field of power generation and encouraged the participants to pursue their career in this sector. Afterwards, he along with Kazi Ahmed Asif Fuad, Motivator, IEEE AIUB Student Branch; Lecturer, Faculty of engineering, AIUB handed over crests and tokens of appreciation to Engr. Md. Mahadi Habib, Engr. Md. Fardouse Alam, Engr. Md. Amzad Hossain and Md. Mazharul Islam respectively. Later, Engr. Md. Fardouse Alam handed over a book written by him titled "Distribution Substation Design" to IEEE AIUB Student Branch as a gratitude which marked the ending of the workshop.
