On 21st March 2018, IEEE AIUB Student Branch WIE Affinity Group successfully celebrated International Women’s Day in association with IEEE AIUB Student Branch at American International University - Bangladesh. The theme of this year’s International Women’s day is #PressForProgress. The main goal of this event was to develop professional awareness among the students (especially female students) so that they can have a sustainable career in the engineering field. The event comprised of motivational speech and career talk, a presentation on WIE Affinity Group and a wide range of interactive sessions.
The event was inaugurated by the opening speech delivered by honorable Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Siddique Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB; Adviser, IEEE AIUB Student Branch, who discussed the importance of International Women’s Day. He talked about how women had gone through oppression and hostile situations in the past and how the campaign of International Women’s day came along. He advised the participants to be more aware of their rights and be familiar with reproductive health. He also mentioned about giving equal opportunity and educational access to all children and how it is important for the betterment of a society. Later on, he discussed how intolerance creates violence and how it is necessary to maintain respect and positive attitude for both men and women to have a sustainable career. After the inauguration speech, honorable guests and the participants celebrated International Women’s Day by cutting a cake.
Later on, Kashfia Tajmim Nabila, Event Coordinator, IEEE AIUB Student Branch WIE Affinity Group, gave a brief presentation on IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group. At the presentation, she talked about the recent activities and voluntary work of IEEE WIE affinity group. Then she discussed the benefits of joining IEEE WIE affinity group and how it creates ample scope for female engineers to get scholarship for their higher education so that they can develop their skills and contribute more to the society. After that, there was a short quiz upon the given presentation.
Followed by the presentation, the career talk and motivational speech session of the event took place. The session was conducted by respected Dr. Dilshad Mahjabeen, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Stamford University Bangladesh; Branch Counselor, IEEE Stamford University Student Branch. The session comprised of two parts. At the first part of the session, the speaker discussed the theme #PressForProgress and explained its meaning. Then she talked about some inspirational personalities who made their mark in the world through their hard work and dedication and advised the participants to be strong and bold if they want to be at the pinnacle of success. After that, she moved to the next part of the session- Career Talk, where she talked about different career plans and their opportunities. She explained the necessary qualities and requirements to flourish one’s career. She discussed the importance of choosing a career properly. Afterward, Tasnuva Tasneem, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Engineering, AIUB, Motivator, IEEE AIUB Student Branch, Coordinator, IEEE AIUB Student Branch WIE Affinity Group, handed over crest and token of appreciation to the speaker Dr. Dilshad Mahjabeen.
After that, an interactive session with the participants took place where they were shown a series of paired images and asked to spot the differences between them. Later, Tasnuva Tasneem announced the Executive Committee of IEEE AIUB Student Branch WIE Affinity Group for the year 2018. She also handed over the prizes to the winners of the interactive session and quiz.
Followed by the prize giving session, the executive committee of IEEE AIUB Student Branch WIE Affinity Group and IEEE AIUB Student Branch handed over certificate and token of appreciation to respected Tasnuva Tasneem. Later, a photo session took place with the participants, speaker and guests which concluded the event.
